Top PR Firms Rule Out Working With Climate Deniers
A number of the world’s leading public relations firms have ruled out working with organizations that deny the existence of human-caused climate change or that seek to block regulations that would limit carbon emissions, according to a recent article in the Guardian. Major PR firms that have made this decision include WPP, Waggener Edstrom (WE) Worldwide, Weber Shandwick, Text100, and Finn Partners. This shift is especially significant given the fact that PR firms have played a seminal role in shaping public understanding about the existence (or nonexistence) and causes of climate change. Not all companies have taken this stance, however. The U.S.-based firm Edelman, the largest independently-owned PR firm in the world, has not ruled out partnering with climate deniers. Companies reported their stances on working with climate deniers in response to a survey from the Guardian and the DC-based group the Climate Investigations Center.
