Each of ecoAmerica’s programs is designed to engage mainstream Americans in environmental solutions by illustrating the opportunities and benefits inherent in those solutions. Nature Rocks is a program developed in conjunction with the Children & Nature Network that is about reintroducing kids and families to nature, improving their lives and planting the seeds for the development of environmental values in a broader constituency. The campaign was created to combat “nature deficit disorder,” a term coined by New York Times bestselling author and ecoAmerica board member, Richard Louv.
This public engagement campaign features a dynamic website with simple tools to find nature and choose activities based on criteria such as a child’s age and the amount of time that’s available for play in nature, thereby removing the obstacles that might prevent parents from going outside with their kids. In addition to the website itself, we engage this audience of parents by means of media, both social and national, through grassroots efforts and also seasonal campaign offerings such as activity guides and photo challenges.
This winter, we’ve developed a comprehensive Nature Rocks Winter Activity Guide, a model example of the Nature Rocks brand and partnership-driven outreach. It is a collaboration of creative winter activities organized in a way that inspires and motivates parents to get outdoors through the positive, fun and easy tone and tools. It incorporates tips and advice from some of our wonderful partners like REI, andThe Nature Conservancy. Download your Nature Rocks Winter Activity Guide.
